What is server virtualisation and why should I be considering it for my business?
Virtualisation is the ability to deploy multiple “virtual” servers on a single physical hardware platform. Each virtual server acts in the same way as a physical server does. Your operating system “sees” the virtual servers as having the same hardware and operating system capabilities as the physical server.
The key benefit of adopting this virtual strategy is that instead of purchasing one physical server to support one operating system installation, you can now run multiple instances of an operating system on the same physical server.
By adopting this concept it is now possible to typically run 6 – 12 virtual servers on 1 physical server. In simple terms you can migrate all the applications from those existing 6 – 12 physical servers onto 1 new physical server. The actual ratio will very much depend on your individual environment but these figures serve as a very realistic example.
The potential up-front hardware purchase cost savings should hopefully now be obvious and that’s before you consider the other indirect savings ( maintenance costs, supports costs, power consumption, cooling costs and physical space ).
